...However, the Hungarian scientist who influenced my scientific way of thinking is Emeritus Professor Laszlo Endrenyi of the University of Toronto. He also holds an honorary doctorate (DHC) from the Semmelweis University. I cited, in one of my first papers (Panos Macheras, Quick method for the calculation of the absorption rate constant of the linear one-compartment model using all available blood level data. International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 19: 339-343 (1984)), his work on the robust parameter estimation of a simple kinetic model (L. Endrenyi, H. Y. Tang (1980). Robust parameter estimation of a simple kinetic model. Comp. Biomed. Res., 13: 430-436). A few years later he invited me to Toronto and I gave a lecture in November 1988 while working at the University of Michigan as a Visiting Associate Professor. The title of my talk was Quantitative approach for the prediction of the fraction of dose absorbed using the absorption potential concept, 11 November 1988. This talk was published later on, P. Macheras, M. Symillides, Toward a quantitative approach for the prediction of the fraction of dose absorbed using the absorption potential concept. Biopharmaceutics and Drug Disposition, 10: 43-53 (1989). This visit was the start of a continuous interaction in studies dealing with oral drug absorption and bioequivalence. As an example, I refer to the improvement (P. Macheras, M. Symillides. C. Reppas (1996). An improved intercept method for the assessment of absorption rate in bioequivalence studies. Pharmaceutical Research, 13(11): 1755-1758) of his method (Endrenyi L., Al-Shaikh P. (1995). Sensitive and specific determination of the equivalence of absorption rates. Pharmaceutical Research, 12(12): 1856-1864) on the use of a metric for the assessment of equivalence of absorption rates. Laszlo was always and still is a prototype model for me. I used to say that wise people like Laszlo think differently than the average person. We have met up with him in many congresses organized in Athens (Greece), Budapest (Hungary), and many cities in the USA. Through the years we developed a genuine friendship for which I am proud of."

*Laszlo Endrenyi was a person of great intellect and an exceptional pharmacologist and scientist, but above all, a true gentleman and treasured friend with whom I’ve had the privilege of knowing and been associated with over many years. He was also a compassionate and thoughtful global citizen, a fine person you could not but like from the first encounter. During my period as Head and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Rhodes University, South Africa I had the privilege of hosting Laszlo as a visiting professor on two separate occasions which provided an opportunity to establish a research collaboration with him which continued for many years thereafter. His impact and significant contributions in the statistical assessment of bioequivalence have been internationally recognized in academia, regulatory organizations and in the pharmaceutical industry around the world. Laszlo was not only a colleague but a true and trusted dear friend who will never be forgotten and is sadly missed.*
